Selling up to 12 million copies within just 2 months of its release, it can be confidently stated that Elden Ring is one of the leading candidates for the title of Best Game at The Game Awards 2022. Although there is still quite some time until this event, many people have already suggested that the award should just go to Elden Ring. This detail alone may be enough to highlight the value and appeal of this blockbuster at the moment.

There are many reasons to explain Elden Ring’s current success. However, recently, based on a survey from foreign media outlets, specifically gamesindustry.biz, it turns out that the main reason for Elden Ring’s popularity and massive sales, as well as its large player base, primarily lies in the three words “open world.”

Accordingly, up to 80% of respondents indicated that the first factor that made them consider purchasing Elden Ring was its label as an “open world” game. In fact, after a long period of being overlooked and trailing behind a series of MOBA and Battle Royale games, the open-world genre is gradually experiencing a strong resurgence, with several recent masterpieces such as Red Dead Redemption 2, Genshin Impact, and Elden Ring also benefiting greatly from this factor.

Additionally, the quality and media effect of Elden Ring also play an important role, with a significant number of players (67%) admitting they played Elden Ring after hearing numerous praises, while 28% played this blockbuster because of recommendations from friends. Moreover, the survey also provided many interesting insights, especially regarding the reasons why some gamers chose not to play Elden Ring, despite acknowledging it as a top-tier AAA title.

Accordingly, up to 32% of respondents who did not play Elden Ring stated that the main reason for skipping this blockbuster was due to a lack of time. 22% abandoned the idea immediately upon learning that this game is quite difficult. The rest offered a myriad of reasons such as not liking the gameplay, finding the graphics dull, the price being high, or feeling that they are not suited to the Souls genre.
