In December 2020, Riot’s Vice President of Intellectual Property and Entertainment, Greg Street, revealed that the studio was embarking on the League of Legends MMO project. Riot later officially confirmed the Vice President’s tweet, although at that time, the project was still in its infancy.
Now, we can learn more about the project’s roadmap through this WEBSITE. They are actively recruiting personnel to bring the world of Runeterra to life.

“You’re not dreaming at all; we are developing an MMORPG based on the League universe!” Riot stated. “We know that MMOs will require a lot of personnel to complete, so apply and join Riot in creating the legend of Runeterra. Gradually, we will reveal new job positions, but for now, that’s all we have on the website.”
Specifically, Riot is hiring for positions such as gameplay and game design, UX optimization, game content production… And of course, having experience in MMO game development is a huge advantage. By the way, the game still doesn’t have an official name yet; it’s not “World of Runeterra” as everyone thinks.

Regardless, this is clearly great news for League of Legends fans (including the writer, although I’m not a huge fan of playing League, the game’s storyline is amazing!).
A MOBA game that is heavily focused on lore and backstory like League has made countless players dream of experiencing an RPG journey, exploring worlds like the Noxian Empire, the Demacian Kingdom, or the vast and mysterious desert of Shurima. Even though this good news was anticipated, seeing Riot’s recruitment section firsthand truly excites fans and raises their expectations significantly.

League of Legends in MMORPG style is clearly a significant step for Riot in marking its name in the gaming industry. With the recently popular shooting game Valorant, the card game Legends of Runeterra, or the upcoming fighting game Project L… perhaps after completing the MMORPG, Riot will officially put its “fist” down on the entire contemporary gaming market.
