At the annual World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) held on Thursday in Shanghai, Elon Musk affirmed that Tesla is “very close” to achieving Level 5 self-driving technology, stating that “self-driving cars will happen and will happen very quickly“. Musk promised that before the end of 2020, Tesla will have basic Level 5 self-driving mechanisms, which means that cars will be able to drive themselves without the need for driver intervention.
Many large companies like Alphabet and Uber Technologies have already invested billions of dollars in self-driving technology, yet industry experts believe that it will take more time for this technology to mature and for the community to place complete trust in a self-driving vehicle on the road.
According to Musk, in addition to improvements in the existing self-driving system on Tesla vehicles, engineers are developing a new cooling mechanism that allows the advanced computer systems in the cars to operate cooler and with even higher performance.
