A Cretaceous rock formation in southeastern Morocco, with the peculiar name “Kem Kem Group”, has been identified by paleontologists as the most dangerous place on Earth, based on archaeological evidence found over the past century.
The Kem Kem Group was not a barren wasteland as it is today, but a tropical plain with a vast river system, providing an excellent environment for both aquatic and terrestrial animals. This was the precursor to the danger of the land, as the diverse ecosystem was a fantastic source of life for giant “monsters”.

While in some other places, the presence of a dinosaur or a giant prehistoric predator would be enough to make it a horror land, what has been found in the Sahara goes beyond imagination.
The lead author of the study, Dr. Nizar Ibrahim, assistant professor at the University of Detroit Mercy (USA) and the University of Portsmouth (UK), cites the state of the “death zone” Kem Kem Group 100 million years ago, the “golden age” of dinosaurs in the Cretaceous period. Back then, this area was home to the three largest known predatory dinosaur families: the serrated-toothed Carcharodontosaurus; the swift-limbed Deltadromus; and several giant “thunder lizard” pterosaurs. To add to the horror, it was also home to swamp predators – giant ancient crocodiles and predator species in the “crocodilian” group that are now extinct.
“This is considered the most dangerous place in the history of the Earth, a place where if humans could time travel, they would not survive long,” Dr. Ibrahim remarked.
The main food source attracting the most dangerous hunters on the planet was the abundant fish supply in the Cretaceous Sahara. According to Professor David Martill from the University of Portsmouth, a co-author, the fish of that time were not like the fish we commonly see today, but oversized fish, including ancient coelacanths and giant lungfish. Additionally, there was another species that was both a predator and prey: the super freshwater shark Onchopristis, with teeth like dozens of long daggers.
