During the social isolation period due to the complicated Covid-19 pandemic in China, students in this country often had a lot of free time as they attended classes online at home. The downside of this situation was the increased gaming time, which correlated with the phenomenon of children spending too much money on games. What’s noteworthy is that most of these cases use money sourced from adults like parents and grandparents.

The boy in this article is a prime example; at only 13 years old, he has spent 46 million on games. However, unlike many other wealthy families, this money came from the painstaking savings of his grandmother, who collected every penny from selling corn. This money was intended to buy fertilizers for the next corn planting season.
It is known that this family lives in Dunhua, a city in China. The situation escalated because the nephew 13 years old and spent 14,000 RMB (equivalent to about 46 million VND) on games, which turned the family’s life upside down, leaving them in a constant state of sadness and anxiety. What’s more, this family belongs to the basic labor class and is not wealthy at all.

The nephew is only 13 years old and “burned” all this money on a game from the giant Tencent. This unfortunate event was discovered when the grandmother intended to withdraw all the savings deposited at the bank to buy fertilizers for the next planting season but was informed by a bank staff member that her account was empty.
After seeking assistance from bank staff regarding the transaction history, the grandmother learned that all the money had been spent on a game from Tencent. It was then that the grandmother realized that her 13-year-old grandson had used her mobile phone to make in-game purchases under the pretext of attending online classes.

The circumstances of this family are quite tragic; the boy’s parents have divorced, leaving the entire responsibility of caring, educating, and raising the grandson to this poor grandmother. Ultimately, the grandmother had to borrow money to buy fertilizers and hopes to receive some financial assistance from Tencent for this economic loss. Currently, Tencent staff have announced that they will proactively contact the grandmother to address the issue, right after collecting enough evidence from their minor monitoring system.
