Adaptations of famous video game titles have become a “gold mine” for filmmakers in recent years. Unsurprisingly, Netflix is not absent from this trend. After announcing plans to produce a television series based on Assassin’s Creed, multiple sources have confirmed that this studio is nurturing an even more colossal project – The Elder Scrolls, one of the largest RPG franchises in the world that every gamer knows.
Although the latest installment, Skyrim, was released by Bethesda Softworks back in 2011, The Elder Scrolls remains a hot topic in the global gaming community. Spin-off titles such as MMO The Elder Scrolls Online and The Elder Scrolls: Blades (mobile) have also received enthusiastic support from players, helping this franchise maintain its status even to this day.
While The Elder Scrolls VI is still in development with no announced release date, it seems Netflix has quickly reignited interest in the franchise with a completely new television project. According to insider information from Daniel Richtman, Netflix is very serious about The Elder Scrolls series and will approach it meticulously and on a grand scale, similar to how they handled The Witcher previously. Although much of The Witcher’s content is based on the novel series, the experience gained from this fantasy series will greatly benefit Netflix as they embark on The Elder Scrolls in the future.
This can be seen as a bold move, but not surprising for Netflix, especially after their resounding success with The Witcher specifically and the adaptation/fantasy genre in general. The continent of Tamriel from The Elder Scrolls is an incredibly vast world, rich in history, and has evolved over centuries with each new game released by Bethesda Softworks.
There are countless aspects, stories, and elements that Netflix can explore, such as the Dark Brotherhood (a secretive assassin organization), or guilds with a strong martial arts theme like the Thieves Guild and Fighters Guild.
Unlike The Witcher, The Elder Scrolls focuses on the individual freedom of each player rather than confining them to specific characters like Geralt of Rivia. Therefore, Netflix is likely to create a completely new cast of characters, in a scenario never seen in the games, specifically for their series. This will allow them more creative space and bring more surprises to the audience.
Currently, Netflix has not made an official announcement regarding this information. In another related development, earlier this year, Bethesda Softworks also gave the green light to Amazon Prime for a Fallout adaptation – another blockbuster franchise they have produced. It is known that the team behind the hit series Westworld has been chosen for this project. And if Fallout is about to hit the small screen, there is no reason why they would want to shelve their beloved franchise The Elder Scrolls.
