Zalo is currently one of the most popular messaging apps in the Vietnamese market. Zalo has about 70 million regular users with an easy-to-use interface, and the product operates well and stably on Vietnam’s network infrastructure. This makes the app easily familiar to everyone, even older adults, while Facebook Messenger, Viber, and Telegram are still quite unfamiliar.
However, recently Zalo announced that they will begin implementing some changes to their messaging app starting from August 1, 2022, including charging fees to users.
From the announcements sent by Zalo to users, it can be seen that Zalo will have 6 important changes in the near future. It is known that these changes by Zalo aim to limit users from being disturbed as well as to protect users’ information and privacy.
1. Strangers (not in the contact list) will not be able to view or comment on users’ timelines.
2. Each Zalo account from August 1 will only have 40 displays/month when strangers search via phone number.
3. Each account will also only be able to respond to 40 conversations/month from strangers; exceeding this limit will allow reading only, not replying.
4. Users will have a maximum of 1,000 friends; exceeding this limit will prevent adding new friends or accepting friend requests from strangers.
5. The username feature will no longer be used, which applies to all personal Zalo accounts.
6. Each account is defaulted to have 5 quick messages; if users want to add new quick messages, they need to delete some old ones.
Additionally, on June 22, Zalo also launched a paid service package for Zalo OA (Official Account) for businesses. Accordingly, verified OA accounts will have 4 service packages ranging from basic (free), trial (10,000 VND), advanced (59,000 VND), to Premium (399,000 VND) per month.
Note that Zalo OA (Zalo Official Account) is the official business page of a business, brand, organization, or community on Zalo. This means Zalo will only charge fees for business accounts and not for personal accounts.
