It can be said that Resident Evil is one of the legendary horror game franchises. The first installment was released in 1996 and it made a huge impact in the gaming world, to the extent that those of us born in the 80s, 90s, and even 2000s all know about it.
With the release of Resident Evil Village in May 2021, this franchise once again rose to prominence. However, most of the praise has been directed towards the remake versions of parts 2 and 3, thanks to their balance of gore, horror, and action… which made this franchise famous. Therefore, now is a fitting time for us to look back at 10 standout Resident Evil games that deserve a remaster or remake from Capcom.
Resident Evil Outbreak Series
Back in the day, no one could “bet” on the success of playing games online, so Capcom decided to take a gamble with Raccoon City. Both Outbreak and part 2 (File#2) feature familiar names, each with unique skills to survive through the chaos. You can cooperate with other players over the Internet, but since this game was released on the PS2 platform, this feature didn’t work as well as expected.
Nowadays, online gaming is extremely popular, so this would be an ideal time to refresh this title. Resident Evil Outbreak is also notable for emphasizing both survival and strategy elements.
At the corner of the screen, there is a virus meter that gradually increases; when it hits 100%, the game will end if you choose single-player mode, while in online mode, you will turn into a zombie. This meter increases over time or when attacked by enemies, and herbs and medicine can help reduce it. This is a rather interesting feature that could be further improved or added to current games to increase difficulty. Oh, and there’s also a zombie elephant in the game.

Resident Evil Survivor Series
It cannot be denied that this is one of the worst Resident Evil titles, and even its sequel is not much better. However, we know that Capcom can create interesting shooting games like Resident Evil: Dead Aim and Resident Evil: Chronicles. If possible, Capcom could remaster all of these games and bundle them together. If this becomes a reality, it would be an excellent series to play on the Nintendo Switch.
Additionally, this is also a good opportunity to revise the storyline, as the original plot had little connection to what gamers are familiar with, and it did not contribute much to the main storyline. The safest option might be to utilize characters like Ada to fill in the gaps, such as what Chris Redfield was doing during the time between the first game and Code Veronica. In general, adding anything would be an improvement, as Capcom can’t possibly make this series worse.

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries
This game is already 10 years old, my friends. It is a Resident Evil title for the Nintendo 3DS, utilizing the Mercenaries mode which was popular among gamers in part 4 and turning it into a standalone game. At the time of release, the Mercenaries mode was almost as popular as the original game, yet for some reason, it was absent in subsequent installments.
However, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries was not perfect. It felt like a demo, testing how powerful the 3DS hardware was. The stages were few, the game modes were limited, and you couldn’t replay from the beginning (to limit resale). Therefore, The Mercenaries would be a suitable candidate for a remake, adding more stages, weapons, costumes, and characters to enrich the experience. Each character should have their unique skills, strengths, and weaknesses. Additionally, this is also an opportunity for Capcom to integrate unique and rare ideas that are seldom seen in main versions.

Resident Evil – Code: Veronica
This is one of the Resident Evil games that broke new ground in graphics with a 3D environment. However, the game still used a fixed camera angle, which annoyed many gamers with Code: Veronica. In this installment, the Redfield siblings finally meet, but unfortunately, the storyline is a bit bland…
The atmosphere in this game remains dark and claustrophobic, coupled with the setting of a mysterious island prison with typical laboratory rooms and luxurious houses. New monsters like the Bandersnatch are a pretty cool addition, and of course, when remade, it would be even more realistic and vivid.

However, this game has quite a few shortcomings. For instance, if you don’t conserve ammo and items, you will have to replay from the previous checkpoint. Or characters like Steve also need a slight redesign, as just following Claire around is… a bit odd.
Resident Evil 0
Resident Evil 0 is a truly great game, my friends. As its name suggests, this is a prequel to the first Resident Evil and uses the fixed camera angle system just like the Resident Evil remake (2002). You will control Rebecca Chambers – the last surviving member of the Alpha Team from the first game – and Billy Coen – a character no one remembers.
The game has a rather unique mechanism with many co-op elements that force players to switch back and forth between the two characters. Items in the game can only be shared and carried between the two characters, rather than using item boxes as before. This can be quite cumbersome, and gamers generally prefer the older mechanism.

The story and characters in this game also haven’t been well polished, and the new enemies aren’t particularly remarkable. However, Resident Evil 0 still features some very special stages, such as the train area at the beginning. The graphics in this game are also quite good, so there isn’t much need for improvement in this regard, just a bit of quality enhancement and adding some interesting enemies would suffice.
