Although being a protagonist means appearing for most of the game’s duration, to truly shine, they must overcome various hardships and challenges. Sometimes, this is not too difficult, but often it forces players to face incredibly awkward and challenging situations. To better illustrate these cases, here are the top 10 most unlucky protagonists in gaming, feel free to check them out.
Raiden

Raiden has been through numerous unfortunate incidents, such as discovering his wife is a spy, having his limbs severed multiple times, being forced to complete missions without a shred of clothing, and especially slipping in bird droppings.

For the Metal Gear fan community, he is a true comic relief. However, later on, Raiden got his own spin-off game, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, to restore the character’s reputation. Interestingly, right at the start of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Raiden’s arm gets cut off again, leading him to exclaim, “Not again!”
Isaac

Isaac is a boy living in isolation: No toys, no friends, not even a scrap of clothing. His mother even took away his drawings and shaved his head. Fearing that his mother would be willing to sacrifice him, Isaac fled to survive, only to face even scarier situations.

Isaac not only has to fight but also ends up suffocating in a toy chest after finishing the game. However, in the DLC Repentance, Isaac finally gets the ending he deserves. Overall, it’s a more positive conclusion compared to the original game.
Isaac Clarke – Dead Space series

Isaac Clarke is a space miner and the main character of the horror survival game series, Dead Space. In the first game, Issac arrives on the spaceship Ishimura to visit his long-time girlfriend, Nicole. However, upon arrival, he realizes that the crew members are all dead and have transformed into terrifying zombie-like creatures known as Necromorphs. Naturally, Nicole has also passed away.

Although he is not a soldier, Isaac must use everything he has to fight off the space zombies in the game to survive. In conditions where weapons are scarce, he has to use various mining equipment to fend off and eliminate the zombies. However, these tools are not very effective against the zombies, making the players feel extremely frustrated, let alone Isaac Clarke himself.
Venom Snake – Metal Gear Solid 5

Venom Snake was originally a loyal medic soldier alongside Big Boss. He witnessed the fateful day when the base was destroyed and his comrades were killed by the enemy. Now that Big Boss is being hunted by the entire world, Venom Snake is tasked with becoming Big Boss, or more accurately, a stand-in for Big Boss, so that the real Big Boss can rebuild a new base.

Forget all the difficult missions or the painful decisions that Venom Snake had to endure throughout Metal Gear Solid 5. The moment that hurts him the most is waking up from a coma with the identity and face of Big Boss, along with the responsibility of leading his comrades. No one knows who Venom Snake really is; people only know him as Big Boss or slightly deeper as Big Boss’s stand-in. Perhaps that’s why Metal Gear Solid 5 is called The Phantom Pain.
Booker DeWitt – Bioshock Infinite

The main character of Bioshock Infinite is Booker DeWitt, a miserable ex-soldier. His wife died during childbirth, which plunged him into depression and a life of alcoholism. Ultimately, he even sold his daughter to pay off gambling debts. Later, feeling remorse for selling his child, he goes to Columbia to reclaim her, but the trouble is that she now possesses superpowers and is targeted by powerful forces.

Booker wants to rescue her, but life is not a dream. Throughout the game’s storyline, he gradually realizes that to set the girl free and ensure a good ending for Columbia, he must die. In various timelines, Booker accepts a baptism for his past wrongdoings and is then reborn as Zachary Comstock – who is also the game’s antagonist. Therefore, Booker must sacrifice himself for Comstock not to exist. However, while this version of Booker chooses death, it is uncertain whether other versions of Booker in different timelines will do the same. Thus, both the players and the character in the game are left uncertain whether this sacrifice will be in vain or not.
