It is known that Nuomi is a German Shepherd. In a video recorded by its family, this dog enthusiastically assisted its little owner in retrieving items from high places. Specifically, in a situation where the little girl was struggling to grab a bag of chips from the top of a cupboard, Nuomi immediately understood the “problem” and quickly brought a chair for her to climb up. Moreover, fearing that its owner might fall, Nuomi even positioned itself to create a stable base for her to climb safely.
The video, which garnered millions of views, made Nuomi and its owner famous on social media. According to posts on social media, the family adopted Nuomi four years ago. Both of its parents are service dogs. Although Nuomi was not trained to be a “guard dog,” it is still very intelligent, successfully completing simple tasks requested by its owner, such as closing doors, picking up items and throwing them in the trash, and assisting in various simple activities like fixing furniture.
According to researchers, they have discovered why dogs can understand the requests made by their owners. They have conducted brain scans of these dogs. The results show that the left hemisphere of their brains specializes in processing the words they hear, while the right hemisphere is more attuned to the tone in which the voice is expressed. Words spoken with similar intonations and repeated multiple times to indicate a specific object help dogs gradually recognize that object. Thus, commands from their owners like fetching this item or taking something to the trash can be executed accurately by them.
