Ahead of the release of Half-Life: Alyx in March 2020, Valve decided to offer the game Half-Life for free along with the expansion packs (DLC) Opposing Force and Blue Shift. At the same time, Half-Life 2 and both Half-Life 2: Episode One and Episode Two are also available for free play from Valve.

This move by Valve aims to promote the upcoming Alyx installment. This part takes place before Half-Life 2 and shares characters and story elements. Therefore, they believe the best way to enjoy Alyx is to play through the previous parts, especially Half-Life 2 and the episodes. So Valve has opened the doors for gamers to play for free for the next 2 months until Alyx’s release.

Although it’s not Half-Life 3 as many had hoped, at least Half-Life: Alyx has somewhat satisfied players’ anticipation for the return of a legendary series.
According to information from Valve, Alyx is the game with the largest development team that Valve has ever had. Not only are there new people, but this team also includes former developers of the previous two Half-Life installments. This team plays a crucial role in bringing fresh perspectives – a very important part of the game development process. A programmer from this project stated that the design and testing process with VR faced many challenges; however, the final product provides players with experiences they’ve never felt when playing on a 2D screen.
