These misconceptions are more amusing than blameworthy, as they reflect a somewhat positive view rather than a critical one. If you’re curious about what these misconceptions are, take a look at the following list.
GAMERS KNOW HOW TO FIX COMPUTERS

Every day, while next to the computer, it’s inevitable that family members think our knowledge about machines is solid, so they call us down whenever something breaks. Usually, if the computer won’t boot, reseating the RAM will do the trick, but if it starts beeping, that’s a whole different story. As gamers, our main purpose for using a computer is to play games, not to tinker with it. Of course, I think many gamers who have PCs know a thing or two, but actually fixing a computer isn’t simple. To sum it up, we only know how to use them, everyone, if it needs fixing, we find a technician.
IF YOU’RE A GAMER, YOU KNOW ALL GAMES

I often get asked by girls for advice on mobile games, but I don’t even play mobile games, so I can’t help them (what a pity). It’s like because I play a lot of games, everyone assumes I can advise on different platforms, and when I say I don’t know, they respond with “you’re a gamer and you don’t know this game?”. In reality, I can’t blame those friends, as the concept of a gamer might not be very clear to everyone right now. So, misunderstandings like this can be amusing, as everyone thinks I’m an expert in the gaming world; if I don’t know, that’s fine, but if I do, I get to act all knowledgeable.
GAMERS ALWAYS STAY UP LATE

Staying up late to game is fantastic; the night is quiet, no one disturbs you, and after a refreshing shower, playing a few games before bed becomes a habit. But honestly, that’s just a “privilege” during holidays; if there’s something to do the next day, gamers still have to sleep early like everyone else. And not every opportunity allows gamers to stay up late; it also depends on personal habits. I actually prefer playing games in the morning when it’s cool and bright, just waking up makes me feel energized and I enjoy playing more, so I prefer to sleep early at night. My routine is to watch movies and then sleep, not play games, so this depends on each person’s habits. Although I used to stay up late to game, it can change if desired; being a gamer doesn’t mean you have to stay up late, you know.
GAMERS HAVE NO OTHER INTERESTS

Wrong, very wrong; I must say gaming is one of the hobbies of gamers, because I assure you, no one on this planet has only one hobby, right? I often get told by my parents that I’m always gaming, why not go outside and play sports instead, while I clearly play football every week. Besides that, I enjoy listening to music, watching movies, and all sorts of fun things to do in life; it’s just that every time my parents come into my room, it’s always when I’m gaming, so all my memories of watching movies, playing sports, or reading books vanish in their minds. In general, this is a struggle for many gamers; let’s just try to live with it and wait for the day of freedom, guys.
GAMERS HAVE A DIM FUTURE

Many people joke that gamers play so much that their eyes are dim and can’t see the future; I think playing games might make your vision blurry, but it doesn’t affect your future at all, guys. In fact, if you’re good at gaming, you could make millions from it. To be honest, everyone’s future is determined by themselves; I love gaming, struggle in studies, but I still try to complete my tasks, even if not excellently, but enough to not disappoint my parents. So, even if I stop gaming, I’ll still struggle in my studies; the results will still be average, but if I try harder, the results can improve a bit. In short, it depends on one’s foundation and awareness to determine their future; gaming is just a tool for entertainment, everyone.
GAMERS WHO DON’T REPLY TO MESSAGES ARE GAMING

Anyone with a girlfriend probably feels the pressure from this; when you text and don’t get a reply, “are you gaming?” while you’re clearly busy with a hundred things, doing homework, washing dishes for your mom, cleaning the house for your dad, where’s the time to reply? Although sometimes it’s true that gaming is the reason, but generally speaking, it’s just being busy, not automatically gaming. I sadly don’t have a girlfriend to experience this issue, but my friends complain about it a lot; sometimes they get their girlfriends mad for days just because of a disagreement, tough luck for us gamers.
GAMERS SITTING AT THE COMPUTER ARE AUTOMATICALLY GAMING

A computer is not merely a device for gaming; it’s also a tool for work and learning, and gamers, like everyone else, have to study and work too, even though gaming is a major hobby. This is a misconception from parents; before even looking at the screen, they just need to see me sitting at the computer to think I’m gaming without question. Even though I’ve tried many times to explain, even providing evidence, my parents just smile and let it pass, and then it’s back to square one. In reality, most of the time, when sitting at the computer, I am indeed gaming, while studying or working only happens occasionally, so I guess I can understand why my parents think that way.
GAMERS ONLY KNOW HOW TO COOK INSTANT NOODLES

Only knowing how to cook instant noodles is an understatement, everyone; it actually means they don’t know how to cook at all. Gamers play all day, how would they know how to cook? But did you know that many gamers who study or work away from home still have to cook for themselves? If you eat instant noodles all day, how could you get enough nutrients? So, it becomes necessary to learn to cook. I even have a friend who is studying to be a chef; he cooks during the day and then plays League of Legends at night. Instant noodles are indeed delicious, a gamer’s specialty, but they can still cook if they want to.
GAMERS ONLY PLAY WITH OTHER GAMERS

People often think that gamers only talk to each other, sitting together discussing tournaments, new game releases, or story reviews. But in fact, as I’ve mentioned, gamers have many other interests outside of gaming, so we can talk about other topics, like what movie to watch today, or what music to listen to tomorrow. I don’t only have gamer friends; I also have friends who play football, classmates, colleagues, and friends from all walks of life. So, if there’s a gamer in your class or workplace, don’t hesitate to get to know them; they’re not just gamers.
GAMERS LIKE TO STUDY IT

At the end of my high school years, not knowing which major to choose, I asked for advice from many friends in class, but all I got were answers like “if you like gaming, study IT”, “if you know computers well, just study IT”. IT is indeed a field I considered, but I also thought about many other directions. When choosing a major, I thought about my strengths; although at that time, I couldn’t determine much, I thought IT was just about fixing computers… So I overlooked it and chose another major. This is similar to the misconception that gamers know how to fix computers; once again, most of us only know how to use them, not the details, folks.
These are some misconceptions that are sometimes hilarious but can be annoying that gamers often encounter. For you guys, have you experienced any of the above? If there’s anything I haven’t mentioned, please comment below so we can share!
