If you didn’t know, Genshin Impact will celebrate its first anniversary in about a week, as the game was officially released on September 28, 2020. Over the past year, Genshin Impact has become an extremely successful RPG with massive revenue and a huge fanbase. This game quickly became the “golden goose” for the publisher miHoYo.

Due to such success, Genshin Impact players had high expectations for the 1st anniversary event. However, the latest announcements from miHoYo on their forum left the community extremely disappointed. Specifically, miHoYo created several web events to interact with the community, such as coloring and guessing words. However, the number of participants who would receive rewards was limited to just 1,000, and the prize was capped at 100 Primogems.

With a community as large as Genshin Impact’s, the number of participants in the event is expected to be very high. Limiting the number of rewards to just 1,000 is essentially telling players that they need to have “luck” to win. As a result, miHoYo has faced a lot of criticism from players, as even claiming rewards feels like a “gacha” lottery.

If you’ve played Genshin Impact, you know that much of the content in this game is tied to “luck” and “gacha” mechanics. You have to pray for a chance to get weapons and characters. Farming artifacts and upgrading materials after defeating domains also drops randomly. Therefore, it’s easy to understand why miHoYo is facing such backlash for making the anniversary gifts in the web event “gacha” based.
