There is no denying that Dreamy Eyes was the box office hit during the end of 2019 and has continued to thrive even now. According to information from the producer, after two weeks of release, Dreamy Eyes reached two million tickets sold, a figure that every Vietnamese film dreams of. Few people know that the original work of Dreamy Eyes was first published by author Nguyen Nhat Anh in 1990, marking its 30th anniversary by early 2020. This shows that Nguyen Nhat Anh’s novels are always embraced by audiences, whether in book form or adapted into films.
But what if the work had been produced in the 90s, right when it first appeared to the public, starring the prominent names of that era instead of Tran Nghia, Truc Anh, or Tran Phong like in Victor Vu’s “Dreamy Eyes”?

If “Dreamy Eyes” were made in the 90s, no one would be more deserving of the roles of Ngan – Ha Lan and Dung than the trio of Le Cong Tuan Anh, Viet Trinh, and Le Tuan Anh.
1. Le Cong Tuan Anh – Ngan
Among the trio mentioned above, Le Cong Tuan Anh is the name that leaves fans with the most regrets after passing away at the age of 29. With his sorrowful eyes and scholarly face with glasses in “The Bittersweetness of Love”, he truly is the Ngan that directors of the 90s were searching for.
At 27 years old, Le Cong Tuan Anh reached the peak of his career. At this time, he took on the role of teacher Gia in the film adapted from Nguyen Nhat Anh’s story – “White Shirt in the School Yard”.

Looking back, Ngan (Tran Nghia) bears a striking resemblance to the image of the late artist Le Cong Tuan Anh.

2. Le Tuan Anh – Dung
Le Tuan Anh was loved by audiences for his rugged, elegant look, playing the role of a charming rogue in the “instant noodle” films of the 1990s. Audiences first knew the artist through the film “The Secret of the Forbidden City”. Among the three names, Ly Hung, Le Cong Tuan Anh, and Le Tuan Anh, he was the one frequently portrayed with the “bad boy” image, making him the perfect candidate for the role of Dung.

3. Viet Trinh – Ha Lan
Speaking of Viet Trinh, no one is more deserving of the role of Ha Lan than the most famous actress of that time. With her big, round eyes and charming yet shy performance, Ha Lan stepping out from the pages of the story is truly a sight to behold!

Additionally, both Le Cong Tuan Anh and Viet Trinh had previously collaborated in the film “Farewell Summer”. Does this excerpt remind you of Ngan and Ha Lan’s high school days?
Moreover, the film’s soundtrack could include the song “Dreamy Eyes” composed by musician Ngo Thuy Mien. This famous song was created in the late 1960s. The lyrics also reminisce about love and the past, which perfectly align with Ngan’s emotions in Nguyen Nhat Anh’s “Dreamy Eyes” story.
Perhaps Vietnamese cinema could have had a masterpiece “Dreamy Eyes” back in 1990 if these legends had collaborated together.
