After getting married, Huỳnh Như (23 years old, from Bà Rịa – Vũng Tàu) followed her husband Bùi Nhật Phi (23 years old) to live in Xuân Lộc, Đồng Nai. Nhật Phi’s family is currently in the gold and jewelry business in Xuân Lộc district. After the wedding, the couple lived in their own house within the same compound as her in-laws.
Not only did she marry a capable husband with a prosperous family, but Huỳnh Như also made many people envious when she received absolute love and trust from her mother-in-law. Coming from a business background, bà Phạm Thị Tuyết Mai did not require her daughter-in-law to handle household chores; she just needed her to be sharp, skilled in negotiation, and sales.
Remembering the first time meeting her daughter-in-law, bà Mai was immediately impressed with Huỳnh Như because she was exactly the “model” daughter-in-law she was looking for. Như’s beautiful and attractive appearance made her exclaim : “Oh my God, my daughter-in-law is so beautiful. How could her mother not adore her?” However, she was still a bit hesitant because Như was quite young and worried if her son made the right choice in his wife. It wasn’t until they lived together that bà Mai realized Như was very mature and responsible.
The Đồng Nai mother-in-law shared: “At first, I was worried because my son was still a child, very innocent and naive. But my daughter-in-law is mature, so I just handed everything over: ‘From now on, I am no longer responsible. You must take 50% responsibility for your husband, I only have 50% left, I will just support you both in what you need. The responsibility of supervising and managing your husband now belongs to you’.”
From Huỳnh Như’s perspective, her mother-in-law’s friendliness and closeness made her forget all her previous worries and insecurities. Moreover, bà Mai was very easygoing, telling her daughter-in-law that they lived together and shared meals, but parents did not need to cook or serve. Whenever they needed help from their children, they would call.
Not only that, bà Mai also entrusted the couple Như with managing the gold shop. Initially, she handed over 50%, but later, seeing that they were doing well, she confidently let her daughter-in-law take full control. All profits were managed by Huỳnh Như, who could rotate the funds without needing to report back to her mother-in-law.
“Every morning, my mother reminds me to get up early and put on makeup to go to the store. She wants me to always look beautiful. But I am quite lazy about makeup. Sometimes, I do it just to make her happy,” Như laughed.
As for bà Tuyết Mai, she explained the special request for her daughter-in-law: “My family is in business, so we have customers early in the morning. I always remind my daughter-in-law that she needs to get up early to make herself presentable. When interacting with customers, one should always look fresh; we are in the business of serving after all.”
After more than 5 months as a daughter-in-law, Huỳnh Như sees bà Mai as a serious person in business, yet in their mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationship, she is very affectionate. Bà shared that since there are no daughters in the family, she always considers her daughter-in-law as her own child.
During the time she had to go to the hospital to remove a colon tumor, bà was very touched when Huỳnh Như proactively asked to take care of her.
“When I went for surgery, my daughter-in-law came to take care of me. She even washed my hair right on the hospital bed; I was very moved. I told her: ‘Như, you see, people say you need a daughter to rely on, to confide in, but I don’t need that. Having a daughter-in-law is just like having a biological daughter’. A daughter-in-law must love me to do that for me; without affection or closeness, she wouldn’t have done that for her mother-in-law.”
