As dating apps become a popular means of connection, a myriad of comical yet absurd stories have emerged. However, the tale of a young woman in Singapore has taken a darker turn, as she allegedly plotted to exploit an online date that went awry, leading to a shocking “victim” act and police report.
The Date with a Profit Scheme
According to information from the authorities, the incident involving Claris Ling Min Rui (20 years old) began in March when Ling (then 19) met a 43-year-old man through a dating app and subsequently exchanged contact details via Telegram. They agreed to meet, and the man promised to pay Ling 200 Singapore dollars (over 4 million VND).

The two enjoyed drinks at a bar, engaged in cheerful conversation before heading to a hotel for consensual sex. However, afterwards, Ling changed her demands and asked for six times the agreed amount – 1,200 Singapore dollars (nearly 25 million VND). At this point, the man firmly refused, only agreeing to pay 500 USD (10 million VND), prompting the girl to call the police and accuse him of rape. Moreover, she even texted the man threatening him that he was in trouble.
It is evident that before entering the “one-night” date, the girl had planned with the intention of exploiting the situation. She demanded a large sum of money after their intimate encounter, leaving the young man bewildered and unwilling to comply.
The Shocking “Victim” Act and Police Report
After being rejected, the girl immediately changed her demeanor and displayed erratic behavior. She screamed, cried, and even threatened the man. When the police arrived at the scene, she put on a dramatic “victim” act, crying and recounting a completely false story, claiming that the man had raped her while she was intoxicated.

However, with their experience and expertise, the officers quickly noticed discrepancies in her account. Her testimony was inconsistent, and the evidence at the scene did not match that of a rape case. The man had also provided ample evidence, including exchanged messages and security camera footage, to demonstrate his innocence.
After a thorough investigation, the police uncovered the girl’s entire scheme. The hotel’s security camera revealed a story that contradicted her claims. She was subsequently arrested for making a false report, defamation, and threats. Ultimately, Ling admitted to lying because she did not receive the money she desired.

Ling’s defense attorney requested the court to consider a suspended sentence for her, arguing that she “had learned a profound lesson.” The judge ordered a report to assess the possibility of a suspended sentence and postponed sentencing. In Singapore, her act of defamation could lead to imprisonment of up to 2 years or a fine, while the threat charge could result in a maximum of 6 months in prison or a fine of up to 5,000 USD (over 100 million VND).
Her actions not only harmed the honor and reputation of the man but also wasted the resources of the authorities, who should have dedicated their time to resolving more serious cases.
This incident serves as a warning about the risks associated with online dating. It highlights that behind the screens of our phones may lurk traps and premeditated schemes for exploitation. Although both parties in this situation made their own mistakes, the girl’s fraudulent and defamatory behavior is completely unacceptable.
