It can be said that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is one of the most important films in phase 4 of the MCU. The reason is that Marvel made a bold move by introducing the theory of time travel as well as parallel universes in Avengers: Endgame, leaving many issues that need to be resolved before things become too convoluted to control. The next solo film of Doctor Strange will be the key to help them somewhat resolve this task, with the magical powers of the supreme sorcerer Stephen Strange.
As important as it is, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is facing a huge challenge as Scott Derrickson officially announced his withdrawal from the director position of this film and will only continue in the role of a producer. Marvel has confirmed this information, stating that the two sides “could not align on creative content.”

According to sources from We Got This Covered, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige fully supports the idea of incorporating some horror elements into Doctor Strange 2 to shake things up a bit and create a difference from previous films. However, everything should have its limits, as this movie still belongs to the MCU – a cinematic universe known for being family-friendly, which has never had an R-rated or 16+ film.
Director Scott Derrickson thinks differently. As someone who has made several horror blockbusters like Sinister or The Exorcism of Emily Rose, he wants Doctor Strange 2 to be truly intense, with many jump scares and frightening moments to scare the audience. And of course, Kevin Feige cannot accept this request, but few expected that this creative disagreement would lead Scott to “pout” at Marvel, deciding to step down to the producer role instead of directing.

On the other hand, fans are having mixed reactions to Marvel’s sudden announcement. After Doctor Strange (released on October 28, 2016), many are eagerly awaiting the sequel also helmed by Scott, especially since Stephen Strange has become an important member of the Avengers.

On January 9, 2020, all MCU fans felt extremely disappointed by the news that Scott Derrickson resigned as director of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness due to creative differences. I’m feeling very desperate, folks.

Poor Scott Derrickson. To be honest, I was really looking forward to this director’s version of Doctor Strange, but they fired him. (Actually, Scott voluntarily stepped back to the producer role)

So sad, guys!

Perhaps because Feige doesn’t want Scott to turn Doctor Strange into a horror movie, given that there are also young audiences.
However, some fans remain quite indifferent to this news, as they don’t really care much about Stephen Strange.

The hard truth: People only like Doctor Strange because of how Marvel built this character in The Avengers. His solo film can be considered the worst in the MCU.
Despite Scott Derrickson not continuing as the director, Marvel announced that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will still meet the schedule to hit theaters on May 5, 2021. Currently, it is still unclear who will replace Scott, as the Russo brothers are busy working on Cherry – Tom Holland’s new film; Taika Waititi is about to start filming Thor: Love and Thunder this summer; and James Gunn is swamped with The Suicide Squad 2 over at DC, not to mention Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 waiting for him to wrap up.
