It can be said that The Witcher made an impressive global debut largely thanks to Henry Cavill, who flawlessly portrayed the character Geralt of Rivia. Being a huge fan of this famous series, Henry invested a lot of time and effort into his role as the Butcher of Blaviken, from his appearance, voice, demeanor, to his sword-fighting skills. Everything was meticulously researched by the actor to deliver the best performance.
However, creating a Geralt that looks like he stepped out of the novel was not just about Henry’s efforts alone. The costume and makeup design team also had to work tirelessly for this role. Just the wig that Henry wore on screen underwent numerous trials and adjustments, taking months to select the final product that was most satisfactory.

Recently, on the subreddit r/wiedzmin, producer Lauren Hissrich held a Q&A session to address fans’ questions about The Witcher Season 1. Many expressed their admiration for Henry Cavill’s hair in the show, which perfectly captured the rugged, wild essence of a monster hunter, yet was not overly messy or aesthetically unpleasing. The silver-white color was also used very cleverly, staying true to the source material without being too jarring on screen.
Sharing about the design process of this wig, Lauren said: “We had to experiment with many different options before filming. Some wigs were too white, so they shone brightly on screen. Others reflected light and created a strange green hue instead of silver. They looked both funny and quite frustrating.”
After that, the costume design team had to paint additional patterns and dirt textures onto the wig to enhance realism while reducing excessive light reflection. This stage consumed months of their time, as creating texture is never easy. Even the most professional artists must dedicate significant time to perfecting the material representation in their products.

As someone who is extremely fond of the character Geralt, Henry Cavill naturally wanted to be perfect when embodying the White Wolf. In addition to performing all his own stunts, the actor even wanted to grow his hair long and dye it silver for the convenience of filming. Producer Lauren had to persuade him not to do that, assuring him that the wig would satisfy him.
Previously, Netflix had also considered using CGI technology for the beards and hair of some characters in the show, including Geralt. However, partly due to budget constraints (as they had to prioritize CGI for monsters and magic scenes), and partly because Henry did not want to use this technology (even his amber eyes were achieved by wearing contacts rather than special effects), Netflix had to use wigs instead.
After all, the wig turned out to be very suitable for Henry, creating an extremely faithful Geralt that was warmly welcomed by fans worldwide. This is also why this witcher bears the nickname White Wolf. For those who have never read the Witcher novels by author Andrzej Sapkowski, this nickname will be explained more clearly in the upcoming seasons. Lauren mentioned: “We will meet many other witchers, none of whom have white hair like Geralt. This shows that this is the character’s natural hair, not a side effect of the Trial of Grasses (the mutation process to create witchers).”
