As one of the internet phenomena of 2019, it’s no surprise that Mrs. Tan Vlog is the most awaited name among netizens with her super-sized dishes to welcome the upcoming Tet. For people in Northern Vietnam, Tet can’t be without sticky rice cake, and Mrs. Tan probably understands this, so she’s prepared a video featuring the making of a giant sticky rice cake to serve her grandchildren and viewers.
In fact, wrapping a regular sticky rice cake is already challenging; making a giant sticky rice cake is even more of a daunting task, especially when recently, she has continuously failed with various Tet jams or dishes that require careful attention to “the fire.” So, perhaps that’s why Mrs. Tan Vlog had to ask her son Hung Vlog for support at every step. This time, what excites netizens is that she filmed the entire process from wrapping the cake, preparing the filling, to boiling the sticky rice cake with great effort.

To produce a decent product, Mrs. Tan also had to invest in a giant mold while the amount of ingredients was truly staggering. 25 kg of glutinous rice, a lot of mung beans, dong leaves, and pork, which is certainly not a small amount, made everyone gasp in admiration for her boldness, especially when pork prices are soaring as they are now. After each layer of rice comes a layer of beans, a layer of meat, then another layer of beans, and another layer of rice… repeating until the sticky rice cake is completed. Although the cake hasn’t been boiled yet, just shaping it was already a great joy for her son Hung Vlog. At least the failure rate is much lower now.

According to Mrs. Tan, unlike other regular sticky rice cakes, for this giant sticky rice cake, she and her son had to light the fire and cook it for a full 2 days and 1 night to get it done. Another successful aspect is that this special sticky rice cake cooked evenly, without any undercooked parts, as Mrs. Tan had worried before she started.

The cake was finished just in time on the morning of the 30th. However, it seems that everyone was busy shopping for Tet or going out, so her grandchildren weren’t as numerous as usual. The sticky rice cake was described by Mrs. Tan as “as big as an island” and the flavor is simply “this green sticky rice cake tastes like sticky rice cake, kids!” How strange that may sound, but looking at it, people have to shake their heads, saying that it will probably take until after Tet to finish this giant sticky rice cake.
