1. Who owns the middle armrest?

There is no official rule about who owns the middle armrest on a three-seat row in an airplane. However, many etiquette experts have discussed this and have come to the same conclusion. It should belong to the person stuck in the middle.

The reason they deserve control over both armrests is that the person sitting by the aisle has the ability to stretch both legs out, while the person near the window benefits from enjoying the view and controlling the light. Meanwhile, those sitting in the middle can neither easily move nor stretch out, and they have nowhere to lean their body.

2. Why do plastic soda bottles have a ridged bottom while water bottles do not?

photo 1 1588902758513430912680

The “ridged” patterns at the bottom of a soda bottle are used to increase the strength of the entire bottle. This is necessary because plastic bottles need to withstand the pressure of the gas in soda or carbonated water. Additionally, those beverages are often chilled, and as the liquid cools, its volume changes, so the bottle must not be rigid enough to hinder this.

Manufacturers have designed it so that the angle or tip of the ridges at the bottom of the bottle can expand or contract slightly without breaking the bottle.

3. Why do flies never find open windows?

photo 2 1589092757025169506050

Flies are born with compound eyes, allowing them to distinguish light and dark very accurately. When buzzing around a room, the only thing they seek is a source of light. Although an open window is also a source of light, it simultaneously brings in a draft of air from outside. This breeze creates an atmosphere that insects do not like to fly into, causing them to avoid that window and look for another source of light, like the nearby closed glass door.

4. Why is ice slippery?

Ice is only slippery when you walk on it as it approaches its melting point. The sliding phenomenon occurs when a body or object rolls on water molecules that cannot bond with other water molecules on the surface. You can compare this to dancing on a dance floor covered with marbles.

5. Why do cats purr?

photo 4 1589092757502271141141

Most people think that cats purr because of pleasure, as the sound seems to always occur when your cat is being cuddled. However, it has been discovered that this purring has communication and healing properties.

Researchers have found that the purring of cats produces specific frequencies used for healing pain, swelling, wounds, and respiratory issues. This is similar to an internal healing mechanism that helps increase recovery time and keeps their muscles and bones strong during periods of inactivity. This may also explain why many cat owners notice their pets purring when they are in a relaxed state.

6. What is the true color of a mirror?

photo 5 15890927575541633042578

A perfect mirror reflects all existing colors. The scientific definition of white light includes the mixture of all existing colors. For this reason, a mirror is also said to be white.

7. Why are sloths so slow?

photo 6 15890927585671684980326

The reason lies in the sloth’s diet, which consists almost entirely of leaves that are very low in nutrients, making them low-calorie animals. And since sloths live in trees, climbing is also a daily activity that requires a lot of energy. To balance their low calorie intake, they also have a very slow metabolism, moving and operating in a similarly sluggish manner.

8. Why doesn’t glue stick to the inside of the bottle?

photo 7 1589092757079986853374

Most types of glue contain water in the form of a solvent, to keep it thick and liquid inside the bottle. It only becomes sticky when you squeeze it out of the tube and apply it to a surface. When exposed to the surrounding air, the water in the glue evaporates, causing the glue to harden. What remains are the molecules that have adhesive properties to hold objects together.

9. Why is a wedding dress white?

photo 8 1589092757113582429438

In the 19th century, most women when getting married would wear a dress that they could wear again on other occasions. The concept of wedding dresses being white was later promoted by Hollywood films, but traditionally, only wealthy families could afford a white dress for the bride. It wasn’t until the 1950s that the middle class began to follow this trend, thanks to the development of cheaper fabric materials during the prosperous post-war economy.

However, even today, not all cultures choose to wear white wedding dresses. For example, in China and India, brides wear red dresses as a symbol of luck and success.

10. Is a zebra black with white stripes or white with black stripes?

photo 9 15890927571581988949070

For a long time, many people believed that zebras are white animals with black stripes on their bodies. However, it turns out that the opposite is true. The original color of zebras is black. The white stripes only appear later as the zebra embryo develops in the mother’s womb. A specific example in the image above shows that the white stripes of a zebra did not fully develop during pregnancy, causing it to be born with a different coat.

11. Why does orange juice taste terrible after brushing your teeth?

photo 10 15890927572071303739701

Toothpaste messes with human taste buds a little. It blocks the ability to taste sweetness, meaning that other flavors, like that of orange juice, become more pronounced. The result is that the sweetness of orange juice is suppressed while its bitterness is enhanced. That’s why your delicious drink suddenly becomes unacceptable.

12. Why do palms sweat when you are anxious?

photo 11 1589092757246780115815

Sweat in these moments comes from excitement and stress. At this time, your body releases adrenaline, causing your heart to beat faster, blood circulation to increase, and body temperature to rise. The primary function of sweating is to regulate body temperature. The areas of the body with the highest concentration of sweat glands are the palms and soles of the feet.
