These games are not only captivating but also simulate the political activities that a leader engages in very realistically. Of course, these games can be extremely challenging, but once you understand the mechanics, you’ll find them incredibly enjoyable.
CIVILIZATION VI
Starting with one of the most famous strategy games of modern times, Civilization is a seamless and unique blend of various strategy genres. The detail and intricacy of Civilization are part of what makes this game beloved, with numerous customization options and paths for nation development. You will truly have the freedom to be creative and think critically as you build your empire. In the game, you can choose to play as historical leaders from different nations, each offering certain advantages, and based on these advantages, you can establish your own dominion. There are many ways to win in the game, depending on each player’s development philosophy. Some may prefer scientific domination, while others may want to wage war everywhere. In general, the customization options are abundant—just make sure to grasp the game’s mechanics! With such a monumental content base, the money spent is definitely worth it, especially since this game is currently being offered for free on Epic Games. So, what are you waiting for? Get your hands on Civilization VI now!
EUROPA UNIVERSALIS IV
Compared to Civilization VI, Europa Universalis could be described as having much deeper gameplay. This depth can be understood in various ways; it is more complex and detailed, but mainly it is more comprehensive. EU IV allows players to experience the real challenges of a country from the medieval period to modern times. Besides managing resources, military, and relations like in Civ VI, you can also engage in plots and schemes to advance your “cause.” For example, you can build new relationships through marriage, involve a specific nation in trade deals to establish your own interests, or protect a smaller nation and then demand military bases to prepare for war. In general, this game is for those who really understand politics, are passionate about this “subject,” and are not afraid to delve into gameplay, making it a title reserved for true “presidents.”
SID MEIER’S ALPHA CENTAURI
Alpha Centauri is a product of Sid Meier, the creator of the legendary Civilization series. This is the result of his collaboration with Brian Reynolds before they left MicroPose, and it is one of the games that carries the DNA of Civilization, often referred to as the “Civilization in space” version. In this game, players still experience 4X gameplay: explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate. This game is revolutionary in terms of creativity, featuring inventions that humanity has yet to achieve, creating new challenges for leaders to face. For example, nuclear war could escalate into something catastrophic, and players must manage situations to prevent extinction. Managing in ancient times was already difficult, and now players must deal with evolving challenges. If you’re looking for a more intense experience, then definitely give this masterpiece by Sid Meier a try.
ENDLESS LEGEND SERIES
Unlike other turn-based 4X strategy games, Endless Legend leans more towards combat elements. Thus, in the game, players need to focus on battles. Since the story revolves around different factions seeking domination, players must concentrate on building armies and devising attack and defense strategies. However, due to its sci-fi setting, there are many unique customization options, featuring powerful armies with laser capabilities that can obliterate enemies or huge dragons that can wipe out a fleet in an instant. This game not only excels in engaging turn-based strategy gameplay but is also adored for its stunning visuals, effects, and sound design—a true masterpiece in every aspect that you shouldn’t miss.
AGE OF WONDER: PLANETFALL
Also embodying the addictive elements of a 4X turn-based strategy game, Age of Wonder: Planetfall provides players with a prime and peak experience of this genre. Besides an enticing sci-fi setting, which is somewhat like Xcom but on a grander and more diverse scale, players get to build stunning constructions in an extraterrestrial style. Compared to the previously mentioned games, Age of Wonder has slightly faster gameplay, and the development can show clear differences after just a few turns. So, if you’re a bit impatient, this might be a reasonable choice. Moreover, in terms of gameplay experience, detail, and customization, it holds up against other titles, while also utilizing a beautiful sci-fi setting and top-notch graphics, so there’s no reason not to give it a try.
STELLARIS
If war and exploitation are not your thing, then try the interesting trade mode in Stellaris, a quite enjoyable turn-based strategy game by Paradox Interactive. In this game, you still experience complete 4X gameplay, but the unique feature is that Stellaris allows players to engage in diplomacy and trade with alien races. This enables players to increase resources not just by extraction but also through trade, which can be more lucrative than mining, similar to Singapore. Overall, in terms of gameplay, players will still enjoy the full essence of this genre, but the added diplomatic trade feature makes them feel like they are always in the role of foreign ministers.
TOTAL WAR: THREE KINGDOMS
When it comes to civil wars, no story can surpass the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, right? The game Total War focuses not on nation-building gameplay but rather on building the strongest and most diverse army to unify China. It is considered a masterpiece in strategy, offering addictive experiences and challenging even the brightest minds. Personally, I still haven’t fully understood this game, but I am highly impressed by how the developers infused realistic elements into battle formations, such as attacking from behind hills, ambushing, and using waterways for approach. There are numerous real-life tactics integrated with strategies that players can creatively customize. Total War: Three Kingdoms not only provides compelling gameplay but also immerses players in an engaging narrative of the heroic and bloody Three Kingdoms period. If this is the context you love, and if turn-based strategy is your passion, then Total War: Three Kingdoms will be a perfect choice.
DOMINIONS 4: THRONES OF ASCENSION
Dominions 4 may not be as prominent as the legendary games mentioned, but for those who awaken to it, it becomes irresistible. This game uses an ancient fantasy setting revolving around magic and deities. Players will experience 4X gameplay for empire building but from a commanding perspective, likened to a god with the ability to cast spells to gain advantages for their empire. Experience the magic of Norse gods, ancient Egyptian deities, and powerful Viking or Elven armies. It will undoubtedly be revered by fans of series like Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings. As mentioned, this game isn’t for everyone, but if it is for you, you won’t be able to tear yourself away from it.
ENDLESS SPACE SERIES
The game Endless Space is perhaps one of the most famous 4X turn-based strategy games set in outer space. The game revolves around players building an empire in space. Although not as vast as monumental structures on land, it still provides extremely engaging challenges. To win, players can choose a field where their starting position has an advantage, then develop and engage in “wars” with other races. In the game, there are various types of units, mainly related to spaceships, and players can even design their own ships, from combat vessels to exploration crafts, depending on their strategies at each moment. Additionally, players can enjoy stunning and grand graphics, along with overwhelming sound effects, making it a fantastic choice for those who love outer space settings and appealing turn-based strategy gameplay.
FREECIV
Although there are many other strong contenders, Freeciv is the name I choose for its historical significance. Originally a simple project by three students in the 1990s, Freeciv still enjoys support from many gamers worldwide today. The reason is that this game is free yet offers a complex and detailed experience. Additionally, it is very easy to mod, so like Minecraft, Freeciv continues to evolve daily, not through a game development team but through talented modders worldwide. The game can still be experienced as its original version from 1996, but if you prefer, you can choose the online mode to play with others, along with exciting and innovative mods that continuously draw players into the game.
These are the captivating turn-based strategy games for empire building that you shouldn’t miss. Of course, there are many other impressive titles that I haven’t mentioned in this list. So please comment below with your favorite game for us to discuss!
