Over the years, stories of meeting and flirting with online girlfriends have become one of the “timeless” topics on social media, with an overwhelming 99% negative outcomes for those who foolishly participate. Recently, yet another humorous story similar to this has caused quite a stir in the Chinese online community.
Specifically, the incident occurred on June 28, when police in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China, unexpectedly received a desperate call for help from a man, stating: “I am at a hotel and being held by someone,” but alongside it, a female voice repeatedly shouted, “He won’t pay!” over the phone. Upon arriving at the scene, police discovered that the person calling for help was a man surnamed Shi. The man’s initial testimony at the scene was quite confused: “I arranged to meet my online girlfriend at the hotel. But then I realized he was actually a man. I wanted to leave but was held back.”

It turns out that the incident originated when the two met on social media and frequently “flirted” with each other, especially as Mr. Shi noticed that the person on the other end was a very beautiful girl. Then one day, after discussing and agreeing on the price and location, both met at the hotel, and Mr. Shi expressed that he was very excited to “meet” his online girlfriend he had known for just 2-3 days. However, after being intimate and suggesting wanting to “go further,” the poor guy suddenly discovered that his partner was a genuine man.
At that point, both sides began to hesitate, as Mr. Shi just wanted to escape as quickly as possible, while his “girlfriend” insisted that he must pay according to the agreed price. This is how the police ended up witnessing the incident. Ultimately, the conclusion was likely bittersweet for both, as they are now being held administratively for 3 days for engaging in illegal prostitution before further investigation of the matter.
