Finally, the extremely hot show Rap Việt of the first season has officially concluded after the final night on November 14, with a surprising victory belonging to rapper Dế Choắt.
Although the results of the competition have sparked some controversy in the online community, we will not discuss that here. Instead, attention will be directed to the moment just before the winner was announced, when MC Trấn Thành revealed a surprising fact: Rap Việt has become the program with the highest record for online viewers in the world, with numbers exceeding 1 million people.

The moment Dế Choắt was crowned
This is indeed great news for the media industry in Vietnam, as we have a program that reaches a world record threshold. The only issue is that… Rap Việt is actually not the program with the highest number of simultaneous online viewers in YouTube history.

The number claimed to be the world record of Rap Việt

Who Really Holds the Record?
According to official records, the record for the highest simultaneous viewers of a video on YouTube still belongs to “The Space Jump” by Austrian astronaut Felix Baumgartner.
Specifically, on October 16, 2012, the entire world turned its gaze to the skies above New Mexico (USA), where Felix Baumgartner was preparing to undertake a challenge that was like “flirting with death”: a jump from… space.
More precisely, he jumped from an altitude of 39,000 meters, through the stratosphere at the edge of space. At this height, you could see what Earth looks like, so the public referred to his challenge as “the jump from space”.
Baumgartner made a free fall from that height for 4 minutes and 20 seconds, reaching speeds of up to 1342 km/h – surpassing the speed of sound. This number is by no means an exaggeration, as it has been recognized by the National Aeronautics Association of the USA. Upon descending to a height of 1,500 meters, even though Baumgartner’s parachute deployed, he eventually landed in the desert located in eastern New Mexico after a total of 9 minutes without suffering any injuries.

The entire process of Baumgartner’s “death-defying jump” was filmed and streamed live on YouTube, capturing a simultaneous viewership of up to 8 million people – an absolute record that has yet to be broken. The photo of him raising his victorious hand upon landing in the desert was immediately liked more than 200,000 times on Facebook, with tens of thousands of comments and nearly 30,000 shares within just 40 minutes.
Many Videos Have Higher Online Viewership Than Rap Việt
Even without considering “The Space Jump” by Felix Baumgartner, there are actually many events worldwide that attracted higher simultaneous views on YouTube than Rap Việt. At the end of 2019 – when Apple launched the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max, the tech giant set a record of its own with more than 2 million concurrent views.
Or in 2020, the famous singer Andrea Bocelli held a live performance on YouTube on Easter Sunday, achieving a simultaneous viewership of up to 2.8 million within just 25 minutes.
Thus, overall, the number of over 1 million for Rap Việt is still far from being recognized as a world record. But nonetheless, it shows how impactful the program is.
It’s just that… it didn’t break a record!
