It is undeniable that in recent years, being a streamer has become one of the most popular and pursued jobs among the youth. This is understandable, given the widespread availability of the Internet, advancements in technology, and the growing demand for new forms of online entertainment. This has also led to the explosion of livestreaming platforms and streamers at the present time.
The Formation and Development of the Streaming Industry in Vietnam
Looking back about 5-6 years ago, when we mentioned streamers, the first thing that came to mind was probably those gamers sitting behind their computer screens, and at that time, Talk TV was perhaps the most popular livestreaming platform and where many people first came to know Pewpew, Misthy, Trâu, or ViruSs – the pioneering streamers in Vietnam.

However, as mentioned above, with the increasing demand for online entertainment and the shifting preferences of the youth, from playing games gradually to enjoying watching games, the streaming industry in Vietnam has indeed developed in an unprecedented manner. New platforms with many incentives and attractive conditions have been emerging, leading to the appearance of numerous up-and-coming streamers. The content has also become more diverse, completely changing the perception that streamers must necessarily play games as before.

At that time, being a streamer had become a highly desirable job in the minds of many. Light work, high pay, playing games all day, and most importantly, being well-known made many young people choose to pursue this career. Indeed, with high rewards and not too strict entry standards, being a streamer at that time was a lucrative opportunity for many.
But 2020 was a different era.
However, this story did not last long, and any trend has its “time.” The same goes for the streaming profession. When the number of streamers increased too much, the once-rich pie was now divided into smaller pieces, making everything more challenging. Income still exists, but in return, the conditions and standards for approval from broadcasting platforms have also increased significantly compared to before.
Not to mention, after the initial phase of “burning money,” offering dreamlike incentives to expand market share and attract streamers and users, many platforms have now begun to tighten their regulations. And that was when many began to feel that the streaming landscape was indeed “not as easy to live in” as they had imagined.

Simply put, we can clearly see the shift in the careers of famous streamers. Take, for example, the Four Kings of streaming. Once the most prominent names in the Vietnamese streaming community, now nearly only Độ Mixi is fully dedicated to this job. Pewpew, before his comeback, had once aimed to become a successful businessman with a chain of bread stores, while ViruSs has also ventured more into showbiz activities. Xemesis seems to be focusing more on his personal life rather than livestreaming activities now. And let’s remember, Pewpew himself has admitted that the streamer job may not remain “favorable” for too long.

This is quite understandable, as mentioned above, everything has its time. The livestreaming industry seems to have gone through its peak phase, and 2020 may mark a decline for it. Of course, streamers will still exist, and even develop further, but surely, this job will no longer be as easy and widespread for the majority as before.
Although it was a year of ups and downs, 2020 also marked the development and success of many well-known streamers. This is most clearly reflected in the names that appeared in the rankings of WeChoice Awards 2020 in the streamer/gamer nomination category. Currently, the voting portal is still open, so be quick to vote for your favorite name!
