Black Myth: Wukong and the “obsession” for the GOTY title
As one of the most anticipated games with a massive investment scale in 2024, even before its release, Black Myth: Wukong carried high hopes of winning the Game of the Year (GOTY 2025) title. However, as it is known, this game faced a cruel defeat against Astro Bot and had to bid farewell to The Game Awards 2024, winning only one category: Best Action Game.
Because The Game Awards is one of the most prestigious and largest award events, the failure of Black Myth: Wukong left a significant disappointment, not only for Game Science but also for the entire gaming community in China. Just when it seemed like it had resigned to a bitter defeat, recently, both Black Myth: Wukong and Astro Bot were nominated again at a new, massive game award event that is “twice as big” as The Game Awards. This is the Game Developers Choice Awards (GDCA) – an award that has been around for 24 years!
GDCA not only honors outstanding games but also reflects creativity and innovation in the video game industry, with categories such as “Best Sound”, “Best Design”, “Innovative Award”, and many others. Overall, this is also a significant and long-standing game award that is highly regarded by professionals in the field.
Recently, the list of nominees for GDCA 2025 has been revealed, with Black Myth: Wukong and Astro Bot leading the way. Both received up to 7 nominations, directly competing for the prestigious GOTY award. Will Black Myth: Wukong be able to “revenge” Astro Bot, or will it once again have to accept defeat? The results will be announced at the awards ceremony, which takes place on March 20.
